Mondelez Egypt Launches “Kahraba” Project to Cut Carbon Emissions at Its Borg El Arab Plant

Mondelez Egypt Foods has announced the completion of a new green initiative at its confectionery and gum factory in Borg El Arab, marking another step in the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

The project, launched in partnership with the National Electricity Technology Company, was unveiled in the presence of Engineer El-Sayed Hammam, Head of the New Borg El Arab City Authority, alongside senior officials from the authority’s environment and electricity departments.

Named “Kahraba” — Arabic for electricity — the project replaces conventional energy sources such as coal and diesel with natural gas, cutting carbon emissions at the facility from 134 kilograms to just 38 kilograms. The shift has reduced the plant’s overall carbon footprint by more than 71%, equivalent to 6,500 tons of carbon compared to 2021 levels.

Company officials described the project as part of a broader sustainability agenda, with Mondelez implementing green transition initiatives across its facilities both locally and globally. The company said its operations are increasingly anchored in sustainable investment strategies designed to support the private sector’s role in driving the shift toward a green economy and combating global warming.
